Meet Siena's Summer Tour Guides: Jack Blanchard '18

Posted By Allison Turcio | August 4, 2016

Think you'll swing through Loudonville soon to tour Siena? We hope so! There's a lot to do in this region throughout August, and our summer tour guides are pretty awesome—Jack Blanchard being one of them. In case Jack ends up showing you the ropes, here's a little about the Colonie, NY native.

A rising junior, Jack is a marketing major and a self-proclaimed intramural soccer champion. (You may remember him from this post last year: What It's Like to Play an Intramural Sport at a D1 School.)

IMG_20160714_115007_01.jpgHow'd you first find out about Siena? When did you know it was the right school for you?

Growing up in the area, I have known about Siena since I was a child; I even attended soccer camp a few times on campus when I was younger. I did not always know, however, that it was the right school for me. I had wanted to go away for school, and nearly did attend a different school, but there was something about Siena that made it feel like home and I went with my gut instinct when I decided to attend. Halfway through my first semester, I knew Siena was the college for me. I am so pleased with coming here and have grown to genuinely love the school.

What do you like about giving tours in the summer?

Giving tours gives me the opportunity to get to know so many different people, and hopefully make the college decision process easier for high schoolers. Our campus is beautiful in the summer, which makes it fun to walk around and showcase it to people who have never seen it. The marketer in me treats each tour as a sale of the school, and it fills me with pride when people marvel at some of the amazing resources and programs that we have to offer, and when I know that after my tour, the student has fallen in love with Siena.

What do you like most about the Capital Region in the summer?

There is a lot to do in the Capital Region in the summer. We have some awesome ice cream places around, ValleyCats baseball games are always a good time, and nothing beats a good walk at The Crossings; however, my favorite thing to do is probably to visit the Saratoga race track. It has an awesome atmosphere with kind people, great food and a chance to make some money (although I pretty much always lose).

Got a favorite Siena memory so far, or perhaps a "proudest" moment for something you've accomplished?

I have made countless great Siena memories, but my proudest is probably declaring a major, which I know seems kind of dull. Entering college I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to study, and it took until the second semester of sophomore year to officially declare marketing. I met with many people from different departments and took a variety of classes, but finally having a major I could call home was a major (!) weight off of my shoulders.

Finish this sentence: You know you’re at Siena when...?

Wow, this could go many ways! I think I knew right away the kind of environment I was entering when on move-in day freshman year, I got out of my car and Siena students cheered for me and brought all of my belongings to my room. It was my first glimpse of the community feel and helpfulness of our school, and the immense pride that our students have in being Siena Saints.

Do you have any advice for prospective students considering Siena College, among others?

VISIT. Especially if you are local, people tend to look far away first and ignore that we have some pretty great schools here in the Capital Region. Watch how people interact, and notice that students, professors and faculty are spending time together and doing great things. I always tell people on my tours that I hope to see them at Siena in a couple of years, but different schools are better fits for some. Write down what you were impressed by at each school you visit, and go with your gut.

And lastly, last time we chatted, you were playing intramural soccer. Still playing? Still enjoying it?

Yes, I can actually call myself a current intramural soccer champion! I still play and have a lot of fun doing so. Actually, Siena is starting a new men's club soccer team in the fall that I am planning to be a part of so I will probably be playing even more soccer this year.
