In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8, we decided to write a post about a growing industry that needs more women in leadership roles—and a fantastic department at Siena that wants more female students, too. Computer Science. Whether or not you’re interested in it (maybe you know nothing about it yet, and that’s okay!), read on. Did you know that allied health care workers represent 60 percent of all health care providers? And according to ExploreHealthCareers.org, there are more than 5 million allied health care providers in the U.S., working in more than 80 professions. So what's that mean exactly?

When it comes to choosing majors, there are two kinds of students. One group knows from the get go exactly what they want to study and do after they graduate. The other isn't completely sure yet—or is in between two or three fields of study—and not ready to declare a specific major. If you fall into that latter group, there’s a good chance you will be entering undecided. And if that’s case, you might be a little (okay, a lot) nervous about it. Good news! This guide is for you.

Thinking about majoring in English but aren’t sure “what you’d do with it?” It’s a question we get asked often—by students and their parents—so we can tell that the idea of getting a degree in English makes some people nervous. But we say: Turn that hesitation into a deep breath, and then a sigh of relief. Haven’t you heard? English majors are the hot new hires. Read on.

But for those of you who would rather enter college with an intended major or area of interest (or, if you’re at that point in college when it’s time to declare one, and you happen to be reading our blog), this post is for you. As you zero in on a concentration, keep these considerations in mind—to both help you decide and help you stress less about your choice.

As you continue to research which colleges will best prepare you for a successful career, or as you deliberate majors, you might come across people or articles online who will try to derail you from choosing a path in the liberal arts. The collective advice from my knowledgeable team at Siena College, from employers we know and from graduates themselves is this: don’t listen to them.
